Jakarta blends modern skyline towers with colonial-era neighborhoods across Indonesia's mega-capital.
Garuda Indonesia, Lion Air, and Batik Air compete on international routes into CGK, while Singapore Airlines and Emirates provide premium one-stop connections from Europe and the Americas. Budget-carrier competition keeps regional fares from Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and Bangkok among the lowest in Southeast Asia. Direct flights from the Middle East—particularly from Dubai and Jeddah—cater to the large Indonesian diaspora and Umrah travel market.
Wet season (November through March) softens tourist demand and creates the cheapest fare windows for European and East Asian travelers. Lebaran (Eid al-Fitr), which shifts annually with the Islamic calendar, produces the single biggest demand spike—fares can double two weeks before the holiday. The dry season from May to September offers more predictable weather and moderate pricing outside school-holiday weeks.
CGK sits 20 km from central Jakarta, connected by the Railink airport train to Sudirman Baru station in about 45 minutes. Terminal 3 handles all international arrivals and most Garuda services. Be warned: Jakarta traffic is legendarily bad—rush-hour taxi rides to the city can take 2-3 hours. The Railink train or a pre-booked hotel shuttle are the safest time bets.
November through March—the wet season—typically produces the lowest inbound fares. February-March is especially cheap after the holiday rush ends. Avoid the two weeks before Lebaran, when prices spike sharply.
Expect 14-16 hours with a Gulf carrier connection through Dubai or Doha. No nonstop exists from London. Garuda Indonesia previously ran a direct service but it was suspended; one-stop routings dominate.
UK, EU, and US passport holders can obtain a 30-day Visa on Arrival (VOA) for IDR 500,000 at CGK. This is extendable once for another 30 days. Arrive with a passport valid for at least 6 months and proof of onward travel.
